Nisab Threshold Explained
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes Zakat obligatory. The two common standards are:
- Gold: 85 grams (approx. 7.5 tolas) of gold
- Silver: 595 grams of silver
Most scholars use the silver nisab for calculation (lower threshold, so more inclusive). The gold nisab is typically higher. You must have held the wealth for one full lunar year (Hawl) and it must be above nisab. Debts you owe can be subtracted. This calculator uses a configurable nisabβcheck current gold/silver prices for accuracy.
What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is an obligatory act of worship requiring Muslims to give 2.5% of their qualifying wealth to those in need each lunar year. Zakat purifies wealth and supports the poor, needy, and other eligible recipients mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60). Consult a qualified scholar for your specific situation.
